Long-Bodied Tesla Model Y L Emerges: To Be Sold in China

Tesla is preparing to launch a longer version of its refreshed Model Y in China, which was updated earlier this year. So, what will this new six-seater model offer?
Tesla rolled out the refreshed Model Y globally earlier this year. Now, the company is getting ready to introduce a long version of its best-selling vehicle for sale in China.
The first images of the model, named Tesla Model Y L, appeared in applications made to the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Unlike the five-seat standard version, this new iteration will feature six seats. At first glance, the Model Y L’s silhouette resembles the Model X, particularly with its C-pillar and sloping roofline at the rear. However, the overall design largely mirrors the recently updated Model Y.
What Will the Tesla Model Y L Offer?

The Model Y L will have a length of 4,976 millimeters, which means it’s approximately 179 mm longer than the standard Model Y. Its width remains the same at 1,920 mm, while its height is about 40 mm greater at 1,668 mm. Additionally, the wheelbase has increased by 50 mm to 3,040 mm. With an empty weight of 2,008 kg, the car will be equipped with lithium-ion batteries supplied by LG Energy. All these increases in dimensions will provide a more spacious interior. It’s noted that there’s significant demand for six-seat SUVs in China.
The Model Y L will also be impressive in terms of performance. The car will feature two electric motors, with the front axle producing 142 kW and the rear axle 198 kW. This translates to a total combined power of 340 kW (456 horsepower), which is more powerful than the standard Long Range AWD model and quite close to the pre-facelift Model Y Performance.
New Version Aims to Boost Sales in China

Although Tesla’s global sales have seen a decline, the Model Y was the best-selling car in China last year, selling almost half a million units. However, this year, the Model Y has faced challenges from domestic competitors offering more updated technologies, innovative designs, and new models. Sales in China dropped by 17.5% in the first half of the year. However, this decline might also be influenced by the transition to the new model. Tesla now aims to regain momentum in the Chinese market with this longer wheelbase version. For customers seeking a more spacious interior and comfort, the new model could be an attractive option. Tesla announced on China’s social media platform Weibo that the Model Y L will be released in the fall. It is currently unknown whether the new version will be offered in other markets.
